HR Assignment 10

Nutrition in the Wilderness

Having explored backcountry medical concerns over the past three weeks, we should have seen a continuing trend of proper planning and preparation as the primary preventative practice (the 6 Ps) for nearly all medical concerns (and other identifiable risks). Another more specific topic that we should have identified, is that of proper nutrition and hydration.

Your body works most efficiently when it has stores of energy readily available to use. Proper hydration and nutrition allow your body (and brain) to work at their highest capacity.

This week please read the following article- Nutrition in the Wilderness_An Exploration of the Nutritional Requirements of Backcountry Travelers.pdf

Supplement your reading with your own exploration of internet sources (blogs such as- https://blog.nols.edu/2015/07/02/what-you-should-be-eating-in-the-backcountry (Links to an external site.)) (info sheets- https://www.pcta.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/204-Backcountry-Nutrition-Myths-Facts-Quiz-Answer-Key.pdf (Links to an external site.)).

After you have completed the readings create a three-day backcountry menu that you could use on your next trip. Your menu should list the DAY, FOOD ITEMS, and CALORIC VALUE for BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, and SNACKS. (Example- Capture.JPG)

Please create this menu as if you are in the backcountry, away from the amenities and services of the front country. For example, you may have a camp stove or open fire, but probably do not have an ice chest. Or make the argument that you are backpacking in the snow, to a backcounty hut (https://www.backpackerspantry.com/blog/7-best-backcountry-wilderness-huts-in-america (Links to an external site.)) and you may be able to keep food cold, and cook over a stove. Ground your pragmatic decision in reality, with a flair of imagination in planning for this potential trip.

Post your menu below to share your creative ideas with the rest of the class

Managing Risk

The gear revolution minimized many barriers of access to the Backcountry but did not eliminate the inherent risks involved in stepping outside.

This week we will explore risk matrices from Rick Curtis. Rick Curtis is a US Outdoor professional with Princeton University and a leading author and contributor to many fields of study within Outdoor Education. His Risk Assessment Safety Management (RASM) model provides an in-depth, collegiate level introduction and explanation of the phenomena of RISK and his model of identifying and interacting with RISK.

After you complete the reading and watching the clip, browse through the National Park Services list of ‘TEN ESSENTIALS’. https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm (Links to an external site.)

The Ten Essentials represent the minimum equipment you should bring with you when you venture into the back country.

After connecting the Ten Essentials to RASM please answer the following questions in the discussion section of CANVAS under ‘Week 9- Managing Risk’

1- Explain Safety Factors.
2- What is Bailing out?
3- Explain the advantages of the RASM model.
4- Explain the disadvantages of the RASM model.
5- Explain why the TEN ESSENTIALS are so important and how they fit into RASM.

Hr assignment 7

To Build a Fire

Perception of backcountry and wilderness are not exclusive to minority groups. The notion of ‘Man versus Nature’ is a common theme in history, urban development, and literature. This ideology was probably first made apparent to you during High School English/Literature courses. This ideology pervaded human thought, development and culture milieu for the majority of human history. Rivers were dammed, landscapes changed,

Even in Outdoor Recreation, this line of thinking is still around. Survival Skills like shelter building, fending off wild animals and battling to survive the harsh elements away from indoor spaces. One of American author, Jack London’s most famous short stories ‘To Build a Fire’ wonderfully conveys the physical and psychological frailty of man in the face of a harsh, ambivalent ‘nature’.

After reading and taking notes, please answer the following questions below the links.

Jack London- To Build a Fire

Questions: No definite word count. Just answer the questions

1. Why do you think the protagonist is referred to as “the man” as opposed to being given a name?

2. London writes, “He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances”. What does this tell us about the man?  What is his character like?

3. How are the man and the dog similar?  How are they different?

4. Why does London point out that the dog acts from instinct?

5. What do you think London means when he says, “This man did not know cold”?
