 You will use the Q& A format for this case analysis, and keep in mind that you need to elaborate your answers, which means that I expect your answer to each question to be at least a paragraph and not a short sentence or bullet points.

The case analysis should be double-spaced, in a 12-point Times New Roman font, and with 1-inch margin.

The grade for this case study assignment is based on the originality, insightfulness, and overall quality of your analyses. Other factors in your grade are (1) adherence to any guidelines distributed in class; (2) style, grammar, reference of the paper; and (3) your ability to express critical thinking.

Questions:

1. Make a list of the serious suggestions made for increasing income and cutting expenses mentioned in this meeting. What are the benefits and limitations of each?

2. Had you been in this meeting, what other suggestions might you have offered?

3. For the most part, Sarah handled Sean’s inappropriate comments by simply ignoring him. What message did that send to the others in the meeting? How would you have handled someone like Sean?

4. Was it appropriate to have every staff member in the room to discuss what strategies might be employed to close the budget deficit? What are the costs and benefits of doing this rather than simply having professional staff hammer out the recommendations it will make to the board?

5. When an organization is in crisis, how much information should be shared with all staff members who might be affected by management decisions? Under what conditions might it be considered ethical for organizational leadership not to be completely honest with staff?

6. What are the pros and cons of HFS considering applying for grants that are “not quite consistent with our core mission”?

7. Discuss the costs and benefits of accepting or seeking donations from convicted felons.

However, women currently hold 4.6% of chief executive officer (CEO) positions; 16.9% of board seats; and 14.6% of executive positions (Catalyst, 2014). Discuss the following:

  • Do you   think there is a glass ceiling for women leaders? How would you explain the gender gap for women? Justify and support your answer with data and scholarly references. 
  • Identify a well-known past or present woman (someone your classmates could find historical information about) that you would consider a great leader. 
    • Identify 5 qualities that make her a great leader. Are those qualities unique to her being a female? 
    • Review some decisions made by her and discuss whether you think those decisions would have been the same if a male was in that role. 
  • When you review the profiles of female world leaders like former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, Gro Marlem Brundtland of Norway; and President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, do you see differences in external perceptions, pressures, and reactions because they are female leaders? ABC at CM Tech

In completing your reading for the week you learned about the benefits and challenges faced in accounting data.  Chapter 21 and 22 introduced you to managerial versus financial accounting and activity based costing (ABC).  ABC, though challenging to implement, can bring a wealth of clarity to the actual costs and performance of the organization.  Unfortunately it’s not easy to implement, support, and once in existence it’s often met with huge amounts of resistance.  Emma knows that some of the accounting information used at CM Tech has the potential to be improved upon.  She wants to pursue improvements in this area in order to support the forward progress of the performance management strategy.  However, she is not an accountant and needs more information before she can make an informed decision and sell the concept to the rest of the team.  She asks you do do some research for her.  

Your research paper for Emma should include the following key elements: 

  1. What is the difference between managerial and financial accounting?  Which one involves ABC costing and the inward looking performance measures that Emma is looking for? 
  2. What is activity based cost (ABC) and how does it differ from traditional costing methods?
  3. If Emma decides to implement ABC what key benefits will it provide and what key challenges will she face?  Be sure to fully support your assertions in all three sections with reasoning, examples, and research.

Your report should outline the key concepts in each area listed above and provide examples as appropriate.  Be sure your report is a minimum of 4 pages, includes an introduction and conclusion paragraph, title page, and references page.  The title and references pages do not count toward the total page count.  The report should be formatted in APA style and be supported by a minimum of three scholarly references.

Since CM Tech is a fictitious company, you may use great liberty in this assignment in creating or imagining the details needed in order to write your report.  

What good is accounting anyway?

Chapter 20 in our reading this week shares stories about a ship navigator then compares it to a managerial accountant providing accounting data to steer an organization.  The story is quite sad as the ship crashes and so does the company.  Complete the reading for the week, taking note of the important role or accountants and accounting data in organizations.  Over coffee one morning Emma asks you what role you think the accounting department at CM Tech can have in performance management and what risks there are in relying on accounting data to guide CM Tech decisions.  

  • In your initial discussion post share with your classmates what you think the accounting department can do to support and guide performance management at CM Tech and what risks are inherent in relying on accounting data.  In your responses to your peers expand on your agreement or disagreement their assessment of accounting’s role and the risks it poses.
  • Support your initial post with at least one scholarly reference.
