Week 2 discussion: Food security.

Instructions

Pick any one question and respond in an original discussion post by midnight, Day 4 of Week 2.

After the initial post, you must also provide substantive responses to at least 2 of your classmates’ posts and remain active on at least 
2 additional days during Week 2.

1. Are the causes of food insecurity and food scarcity the same? Discuss in detail with examples. Are the causes individual or systemic, and which actors (production, distribution, consumption, or disposal) impact food security the most? Next, what is the relationship between food justice and racial justice? How can nurse professionals detect the food insecurities in their patients’ lives and help alleviate them? (USLOs 2.2, 2.3, 2.4)

2. You or someone you know may have a lived experience of food insecurity. If you are comfortable, can you share the situations the food insecurity presents to the person or family without referring to any names or relations? Do you think environmental issues caused them? Explain. What are the root causes of “hunger” issues, and how can they be eliminated? Next, how would nursing professionals help with the food insecurity issues of their patients? (USLOs 2.2, 2.3, 2.4)

Discuss how health care professionals can ensure that patients’ rights are upheld and protected. Please make sure to provide citations and references (in APA, 7th ed. format) for your work.  Limit is 500 words 

 Discussion Post Topic #3: Conduct an evaluation of your current neighborhood or place of work. Are there any population shifts? If so, what are the cultural demographics, and has healthcare made transitions to address these transitions.

INSTRODUCTION – Many organizations work to better local and global communities' quality of life and promote health and safety in times of crisis. As public health and safety advocates, nurses must be cognizant of how such organizations help certain populations. As change agents, nurses must be aware of factors that impact the organization and the services that it offers. Familiarity with these organizations enables the nurse to offer assistance as a volunteer and source of referral.

PREPARATION– You are interested in expanding your role as a nurse and are considering working in an area where you can help to promote equal opportunity and improve the quality of life within the local or global community. You are aware of several nonprofit organizations and government agencies whose work contributes to this effort in some way. You have particular interest in one of these organizations but would like to know more about its contributions to public health and safety improvements. You would like to report the results of your research in a scholarly paper that you could submit for publication.

Healthcare reform is a constantly discussed topic in the U.S. healthcare system. Various influences, including political, societal, and real-time events (think COVID-19) all help to shape the discussion surrounding reform as it relates to the U.S. healthcare system. This link contains a tracker of all pending or introduced reform legislation currently.

Among the biggest talking points relating to the healthcare reform discussion over the past decade has been the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and whether it should remain as it is, be improved upon, or be dismantled and a new system put in its place. Review the most current attempt at modifications to the ACA in this link.
