Nursing

Week 3 Module 3: Health Promotion, Risk Reduction, and Community Assessment

Module Overview

During week three, you will study risk reduction in population health and community assessment. You will complete course activities related to the process of completing a community assessment. A community assessment helps the nurse to:

· Identify the needs of a community,

· Clarify and prioritize problems, and

· Know what community strengths and resources are available to help solve those problems • Promote entry-level competencies in practicing public health nursing at the systems and community levels of nursing practice

Overall Topics

· Health Promotion

· Risk Reduction

· Community Assessment

Module Learning Objectives

By the end of this week, students will:

· Analyze the importance of risk reduction in population health.

· Examine the process and purpose of a community assessment.

· Identify the key components in a community assessment.

· During this course, complete and document a community assessment.

Learning Assignments

1. Read Nies and McEwen, Chapters 4 & 6 (including Table 6.2 – Community Assessment Parameters

2. Refer to Nies & McEwen PowerPoints in module

3. Read article: Caring in the Margins

4. Read 1939 Public Health article

5. Depending on your chosen community, you may do a walking or windshield survey that you will use as part of your data in your community assessment. There is a video example of a Windshield Survey. This is valuable data to include in your Community Assessment! Please note: Do not drive while completing the survey–have another driver when doing the windshield survey or you may also do it on foot, if able.

6. Review: Mustang Library NURS 400 Data Guide:

. The data guide is set up for NURS 400 at the Mustang Library. It has a menu at the top that includes databases for many of the items you need for your Community Assessment assignment! It also provides a nice overview of data resources available for assessing a community. Please take advantage of this excellent resource for your community assessment assignment.

Items Due

1. Synthesis and Application #2 initial posting due on 9/11/23 at 11:59 pm and
two replies to peers due on 9/17/23 by 11:59 pm (discussion is not self-graded) – Caring in the Margins

Discussion Topic

Task: Reply to this topic

Please read the article – Caring in the Margins by Enestvedt et al. (2018). The article discusses essential skills in transcultural nursing around issues of equity and social justice. Consider 'aha' takeaways while/after you read the article. The synthesis and application post focuses on getting you to think a bit deeper on this topic, specific to your own profession and public health nursing. There are three questions for you to answer:

1. Consider your own profession. What do you see as opportunities for adopting pieces of what you read in this article within your current professions and/in public health nursing?

2. Consider your own profession. Are there pieces of what you read in this article that you are struggling with and/or feel are not a fit regarding your profession and/or in public health nursing?

3. What is something you want to know more about, as it relates to this article?

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

DISCUSSION: PATIENT PREFERENCES AND DECISION MAKING

To Prepare:

  • reflect on a time when you experienced a patient being brought into (or not being brought into) a decision regarding their treatment plan.
  • Review the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute’s Decision Aids Inventory at https://decisionaid.ohri.ca/.
    • Choose “For Specific Conditions,” then Browse an alphabetical listing of decision aids by health topic.
  • After you have chosen a topic (or condition) and a decision aid, consider if social determinants of health were considered in the treatment plan Social determinants of health can affect a patient’s decision as these are conditions in the patient’s environment, such as economic stability, education access, health care access and quality, neighborhood, and social and community context.
  • NOTE: To ensure compliance with HIPAA rules, please DO NOT use the patient’s real name or any information that might identify the patient or organization/practice.

Post a brief description of the situation you experienced and explain how incorporating or not incorporating patient preferences, social determinants of health, and values impacted the outcome of their treatment plan. Be specific and provide examples and at least 3 references. Then, explain how including patient preferences, social determinants of health, and values might impact the trajectory of the situation and how these were reflected in the treatment plan. Finally, explain the value of the patient decision aid you selected and how it might contribute to effective decision making, both in general and in the experience you described. Describe how you might use this decision aid inventory in your professional practice or personal life.

 Discussion Topic

Top of Form

Submit your paper topic in this discussion board. Argue the significance of the chosen issue in improving global public health. You need to select a community/state within a low/middle income (developing) country afflicted by the selected global public health problem.

Each topic should be supported by two studies from peer-reviewed journals.

Word limit 350, APA in-text citation and reference list required.

When student submitted the previous topic comments professor did

Good attempt! But more work is required, you need to cite 2 studies from a chosen country in Africa – please select one country only, example Nigeria and all articles should be focused on that community. For the paper you need 5 studies from the same country on the same topic. For each study you will review – Purpose, methods, results and recommendations.

Please submit your articles and citations – this needs to be re-done, I will re-grade.

This is too broad and what are your variable. This is not a study and also looks like a copy paste – you need to write in your own words.

Here is a suggested topic and paper:

Effect of ritualistic bathing on water quality of Ganga river in India.

See if you can find similar studies that explore the impact of independent variable (bathing) on dependent variable (water quality)

You need total 5 such studies.

All the Best,

2. Literature Review Assignment

Choose one articles on your chosen topic for this assignment. The review should include following components: study purpose, study methods – characteristics of the participants, study design, data-collection procedures, instruments used, and study results.

Page length: 1 page. DO not attach the document, the review should be visible in the discussion board to the reader.

References required: APA7 – in-text and reference list.

An 83-year-old resident of a skilled nursing facility presents to the emergency department with generalized edema of extremities and abdomen. History obtained from staff reveals the patient has history of malabsorption syndrome and difficulty eating due to lack of dentures. The patient has been diagnosed with protein malnutrition.

This patient has a history of malabsorption syndrome, which is the body’s inability to absorb necessary nutrients from an ingested food and will lead to protein, vitamin and electrolyte deficiencies. This may also be the cause of his generalized edema. many factors can lead to the diagnosis of this patient, such as the underlying condition of the patient, age and physicals factors.

Base of this patient age, the malabsorption syndrome can result from a genetical mutation that led to a disease such as atypic cystic fibrosis which is a genetic disease. Here, the patient inherits two defective genes from the DNA of each parent. Usually, the primary result of a genetic disease is the inability to produce a certain enzyme normally, which is a type of protein used to speed up or catalyze chemical reactions necessary for cell function (Pelliccia, J., 2022).  This patient excessive water accumulation is due to his protein malnutrition. Individuals with low protein levels are unable to maintain a normal oncotic pressure; therefore, water is not reabsorbed into the circulation and, instead, causes body edema (McCance & Huether., 2019). Also, Low level of albumen will not help in term of holding salt or water.

This response occurred due to the patient’s lack of protein, starvation, and lack of a denture. Remember that food ingested without having been properly cut or chew will not be digested well. Edema is present due to the lack of protein in the blood. This patient’s albumen levels are expected to be low according to Suryawanshi, Vig, Masih, and Joseph (2018). Endothelial cell is responsible for the physiological response.
