Hindu Deity Discussion

After studying Module 5: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss the following:

It is said that there are over 330 million gods and goddesses within the Hindu religion and each god/goddess has his or her own story that reveals his or her own religious significance. For this discussion, you will be selecting 2 different Hindu gods/goddesses of your choosing that you would be interested in learning more about.

For each selected Hindu deity, you must provide the following:

  1. Name and Title (Ex: Vishnu, God of Preservation)
  2. Image of the deity
  3. Brief explanation of why you chose that specific god/goddess. Below are some examples of this:
    • Maybe that Hindu god/goddess reminds you of a Christian saint or biblical character who is the Catholic patron/patroness of a particular human endeavor, career field, or avocation that somehow pertains to you
      • Ex: Saint Cecilia Patroness of Musicians and Sarasvati Hindu Goddess of Music
    • Maybe you found the specific image of that god/goddess intriguing
    • Maybe there is a pop culture reference to the deity
      • Ex: TV series, movie, book, video game, etc.
  4. Deity in Scripture
    • Summarize a story from the Hindu scriptures in which that the deity plays a major role.
      • This can be their origin story or another important story about the deity.
  5. Relationship to other Hindu Deities
    • How is this specific deity related to at least 2 other Hindu deities?
      • Ex: Is the selected deity a mother/father to another deity or possibly a husband/wife of another deity?
  6. Imagery & Symbolism
    • Explain the traditional symbolism associated with the selected deity
      • Ex: Color of their skin, why they are depicted with specific animals, pose or stance in which they are depicted, any object they may be holding or that are depicted around them

What Drives Us?

Before we get into the details about healthcare and its systems, let’s start at the

beginning. We all bring history, sometimes a lot of history, into any discussion. College

is a place to question some of those ingrained beliefs, listen to different points of view,

and grow. Outside of your profession, you get to be…you. In the U.S. you have the right

to free speech, free beliefs, and inalienable rights. Those can be as individual as you

are.

Inside your profession that is not quite true. Inside your profession you must incorporate

the professional ethics for your area, regulatory mandates, and represent your employer

in the fashion they determine is correct. Each of us must make peace with this or find a

profession without this requirement. To make peace, you need to understand what your

beliefs are. Healthcare is first and foremost a profession dedicated to people. Not just

some people. Not just those people we personally consider ‘worthy’.

All people.

If this is a concept you cannot get behind, find another profession. Everyone, including

you, will be better off.

My experience: I attended a Narcotics Anonymous meeting and had the opportunity to listen to several individuals share their stories—some who have made progress in overcoming their active addiction. Many spoke about leaving their families for drugs and combining drug use with alcohol. One individual shared how they had become dependent on the drug just to function. The experience was an eye-opener and reminded me of how resilient a person can be.

Objectives After your one-day clinical experience, you will be able to: 1. Identify and briefly describe purpose of the support group and/or services offered to the clients. 2. Identify types of clients, problems and issues discussed, education provided, and role of the group leader. 3. Describe the needs of the group. 4. Explain the effect of substance abuse on the client. 5. The recovery model is an important component of substance abuse treatment. Why is the model so challenging for the client(s)? 6. Describe your experience and/or concerns after having attended the group.

Using the College’s format (APA – 6th edition) for typed written assignments, the assignment is to be 2 pages (not counting title page and reference page and no abstract is needed) and address the objectives stated above.
