Assignment Preparation

Overview

There are three written assignments in the course, in which you will use the same organization to analyze the culture and make recommendations. It is essential you start to think about your company selection now.

Consider selecting a company for which you or a family member works. You might also choose a civic organization. To ensure your selection sets you up for success in all three assignments, be sure that your company:

  • Is one with which you are familiar and is one in which you have access to internal processes.
  • Has a true issue that need to be resolved.
  • Is one for which you can think of possible solutions to the issue that are realistic and enforceable.

Requirements

For this assignment, write a 1–2 page double-spaced paper in which you will discuss:

  • Your selected organization.
  • The issue you will be analyzing.
  • How the issue hinders organization inefficiency.
  • This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course.

Confidentiality:Since you will be addressing real issues in real organizations in your assignments, it is important to respect confidentiality. Feel free to use an alias for any company or individuals you might mention in your assignments. Remember that all discussions about these organization should only occur within this course and not be shared with people outside the course.a

Assignment: Professional Leadership Journal: Narcissism Assessment

This week’s self-assessment, located in your course text (Chapter 4, p. 138), includes one brief individual leadership assessment entitled “Narcissism.”

For this Personal Leadership Journal, complete the “Narcissism” assessment. As a scholar-practitioner of health care administration leadership, what might the assessment reveal about your perspective on the topic of Narcissism? Consider how Narcissism may impact your role in the field of health care administration.

The Assignment (2–3 paragraphs):

  • Explain new insights gained based on your results of the “Narcissism” assessment.
  • Explain how these new insights might impact your current or future role as a health care administration leader.

Discussion 8

A Chinese proverb states, “In a broken nest, there are few whole eggs.” Within an organization, broken professional relationships may result in damage to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. For a leader, any “crack” or “break” in leadership may create future problems within the organization. With use of Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Social Network Theory, an effective leader may find that the creation of positive, professional relationships with subordinates is helpful in preventing breaks in relationships in order to guide an organization toward success.

For this Discussion, reflect on the similarities and differences between Leader-Exchange Theory and Social Network Theory. Consider how you might integrate each theory into your own personal, unified leadership theory. Think about how you might use this theory in a health care administration scenario.

Post a brief comparison between Leader-Member Exchange and Social Network Theory. Then, explain how you might apply Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Social Network Theory into your personal, unified leadership theory. Finally, relate this personal, unified theory to a health care administration scenario with which you are familiar. Be specific and provide examples.

Project: Scholar-Practitioner Project: Visual Representation of Health Care Administration Leadership Theory

Having a Health Care Administration Leadership Theory is essential to any health care administration leader. With a well-constructed theory, you integrate leadership perspectives into practice in order to offer solutions to health care administration problems. Also, with a visual representation of your theory, you may present another way to highlight your research with effective design and theory implementation.

For this Assignment, you complete another part of your Health Care Administration Leadership Theory based upon your understanding of leadership perspectives you have reviewed in this course. In addition, you must use a systems thinking approach in the development of your visual representation of your personal Health Care Administration Leadership Theory.

This week you will provide a visual representation of your Health Care Administration Leadership Theory. It can be a table, schematic diagram, graph, or any other representation you choose. Please feel free to be creative. However, the focus MUST be on leadership.

Both the narrative explanation and the visual representation are included in the page count for the Assignment length. Remember, your theory can be based on those that we have examined in this course or that you have researched on your own. There is no wrong theory. What matters is the explanation of how it addresses the gap and uses systems thinking. While this does not have to be addressed now, keep in mind the last part of the Project will involve presenting a methodology that tests the developed theory empirically.

The Assignment (3–4 pages):

  • Provide a narrative explanation that shows how the developed theory can close the “gap” identified in the first part of the Project.
  • Explain how it incorporates systems thinking.

Support your Project with specific references to all resources and current literature used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Discussion 9

Although often difficult to define, leadership presents a pivotal aspect in any organization. Over the course of history, various leaders have embodied characteristics and qualities that have proved effective and ineffective within various situations. For example, a health director of a small clinic might exhibit a different leadership perspective than a director of staff for an intensive care unit at a large hospital. Though characteristics and qualities may vary among leaders, their primary goals for followers and organizations may be similar. Understanding the most appropriate leadership perspective may impact your future leadership perspective in the field of health care administration.

Post an explanation of how transformational leadership and transactional leadership relate to Trait Theory, Skills Approach, and behavior perspective. Then, explain under what circumstances a transformational leadership might be preferred and under what circumstances a transactional leadership might be preferred for the practice of health care administration. Provide an example and justify your response.

Before the end of the week, begin commenting on at least two of your classmates’ responses. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be objective, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Submit your responses in the Discussion Area.

Introduction:

By the due date assigned, respond to the assigned discussion questions and submit your responses to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area. Respond to the assigned questions using the lessons and vocabulary found in the reading.

Select any one of the following starter bullet point sections. Review the important themes within the sub-questions of each bullet point. The sub-questions are designed to get you thinking about some of the important issues. Your response should provide a succinct synthesis of the key themes in a way that articulates a clear point, position, or conclusion supported by research. Select a different bullet point section than what your peers have already posted so that we can engage in several discussions on relevant topics. If all of the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to reuse the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

Assignment: Group Case Study 2

As a future leader in the field of health care administration, you may face many chronic health threats to various systems. As you work to combat these threats and ensure community wellness, you are likely to become an agent of social change. This objective may be more challenging and critical to achieve in matters such as health emergencies and outbreaks. For leaders, outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics elicit critical and timely attention to situations in health care administration.

In this week’s article by Gostin, Lucey, & Phelan (2014), the authors highlight the challenges present with an Ebola epidemic on a global scale. Using this Learning Resource from this week as well as 2–4 additional resources you may find from the Walden Library, current events, etc., consider your leadership perspective during an outbreak, epidemic, or pandemic.

As you collaborate with your group, individually select one of the following leadership roles that would respond during this outbreak:

  • Director, FEMA
  • Director, CDC
  • Governor of an afflicted state
  • Incident Response Commander
  • Response Leader, American Red Cross (or other nongovernmental organization)
  • Health Care Administrator for a large medical center

After selecting your leadership role, use a systems approach to work with your group to establish immediate response in preventing another pandemic.

The Assignment—Part 1:

Individual Case Analysis (1–2 pages):

Based on the leadership role you selected for the Assignment, include the following:

  • A summary of the leadership challenges this leader would face in assuring the system changes necessary to be prepared for the next outbreak, epidemic, or pandemic
  • An explanation of how your leadership challenges as this leader relate to challenges of the other leaders listed above

Support your Case Study with specific references to all resources and current literature used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
