Hello, everyone. I am in my second semester (currently taking my fifth and sixth classes in the program). I have been an RN since 2012 and have worked in the mental health field since 2000. I am a nurse manager over two forensic psychiatric units, specializing in competency evaluations for individuals facing felony charges. I have worked at my current job since 2015. I entered this program to obtain the education necessary to continue rising up the ladder. I hope to settle into a director position within the next three years.

Prompt 2:

Recent events I believe are related to climate change include widespread wildfires and unseasonably warm temperatures.

Human-created emissions of greenhouse gases have led to increase in heat extremes (NASA, n.d.). As I write this, it is October 30. The temperature was in the high 70s as recently as a few days ago and was in the low 80s last weekend where I live (Kentucky).

Dry, hot conditions provide fuel for wildfires (NASA, n.d.). Although wildfires can be caused by humans acting carelessly, the condition of vegetation stimulates the spread of fires after they start (NASA, n.d.).

Individually, we can prevent wildfires by not starting fires in dry conditions and not leaving fires unattended. We need to make sure the fire is extinguished before moving on. Institutionally, local media needs to effectively communicate when conditions are unsafe for burning. In rural Kentucky, local government uses social media and highway signs to communicate when “burn bans” are in place.

As nurses, we can advocate for our facilities to be smoke-free and complete safety checks to ensure lighters and/or tobacco units are not being used. We can inspect equipment before using to ensure no frayed wires or other hazards are in play. We can dim or turn off lights when possible to conserve electricity and work to minimize waste.

Hello, my name is Rickell Cox and I am new student to Gallen college RN to BSN program. My goal to improve my knowledge in the nursing field as I lee earn a higher degree in nursing. I currently practice in Richmond Virginia specializing in OR nursing. Climate change is constant across the region. One of the latest event is global warming effects. “According to the
2022 Global Climate Report from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, every month of 2022 ranked among the ten warmest for that month, despite the cooling influence from the
La Nina climate pattern in the tropical Pacific”. Global warming is life treating due to extreme weather changes”. On July 6, 2023 recent events that indicate Earth's climate has entered uncharted territory. Global warming and deforestation, the drought that has fueled large wildfires that have made the air hazardous for millions.” Also global warming effects air pollution, landslides, that leading to destroying communities. Way to stop global warming are planting trees, turn off electric devices, recycle, drive less, etc. A second  event,”Hurricane Ida made landfall at Port Fourchon, Louisiana, on August 29, 2021 as a category 4 storm with 150 mph winds. There is no way we can prevent a hurricane. Climate changes effects the world in many different ways including lost on species, health risk, severe storms, and more. It is important for us to help the climate in any way possible. As nurses we advocate with green cleaning products, and recycling at all times and encouraging are patient to do the same.

Food insecurity and food scarcity by definition are different. Food Insecurity is caused by a lack of means to obtain food with the leading cause being income. Food scarcity is the lack of food available this could be caused by location or production. Both situations create hunger.  A person with food insecurity could be near a market with available goods but have limited or no money to buy food.  A person with food scarcity may have the money for goods at the market but the closest market with goods available is an hour's drive away or the market close by has limited goods available for sale.
These would be densely populated areas without an adequate grocery source or areas of very low population where there are no grocery stores until the next major city (The Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2021).  “
It is not confined to one single sector, sub-system (e.g. value chain, market) or discipline, and thus broadens the framing and analysis of a particular issue as the result of an intricate web of interlinked activities and feedbacks. It considers all relevant causal variables of a problem and all social, environmental, and economic impacts of the solutions to achieve transformational systemic changes” (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. (2018). Sustainable food systems.).

As nurses, we can assess our patients for having signs of being malnourished, and be observant of those that tend to hoard every scrap left on their tray for “later”, these are in my experience the patients having food security issues outside of the hospital. We can provide resources before they discharge, such as their closest food banks and food drive locations so that they may receive these resources. The hospital I work for does monthly community service events, it’s usually a food bank so that we can collect and give food out to those in need. As nurses, we can get involved within these communities. I’m not saying use all your free time but a few hours one weekend a month is such a great help with soap kitchens, food drives, food banks, etc.

Food insecurity refers to the lack of consistent access to food. Chronic food insecurity can lead to various health problems among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions (Nord, Coleman-Jensen, Andrews, & Carlson, 2020, p. 1). Food insecurity can be on the individual level or the community level. Food scarcity on the other hand is more of a systemic issue, affecting the population. Multiple factors can cause food scarcity including adverse weather conditions, population growth, and political climate (Kanter, Redmond, & Wansink, 2013). When looking at what impacts food security the most I quickly thought consumption would play the largest role. Food production cannot keep up with the amount of food that humans are consuming. This could be from overpopulation. The relationship between food and race takes a look at the community's access to healthy, sustainable food. These communities may only have convenience stores and fast food supplying them with their weekly food intake. Not only would they have to travel farther for healthy food, but it also is much more expensive than a fast food dinner. Nurses can detect food insecurities in a multitude of ways. A basic assessment would tell a nurse a lot. Direct questioning can go a long way! This is why rapport with patients is important.

A nurse at the local Senior Center made the following notation about a client: A 74-year-old female client wearing eyeglasses with bifocal lenses and hearing aid in her left ear. Walks with a shuffling gait, using a cane for support. Wearing house slippers and housedress. States, “My other doctor says I should have my eyes looked at by an expert. It’s been a while, and my eyes seem to be acting up lately. I can’t see so good anymore.” The client states that she takes medication for “sugar” and her blood pressure and has worn glasses for years with the last prescription changed about 3 years ago. “I was a seamstress for many years and quit when I couldn’t see to thread the needles anymore-just in time too. These new materials are too hard to work with!” Denies using any eye drops. Describes vision changes as difficulty seeing well at night, especially if trying to read. Uses a magnifying glass to help when reading. No eye pain or discharge, although eyes sometimes feel “dry and scratchy,” with the left eye being worse than the right. Admits to rubbing eyes but without relief.

Each student will individually write a paper over a relevant maternal-infant nursing topic that is addressed by a Healthy People 2030 objective. Healthy People 2030 objectives are available at

https://health.gov/healthypeople/objectives-and-data/browse-objectives
.The concept chosen must be appropriate and relevant to maternal-infant nursing. The purpose of this assignment is three-fold:  to thoroughly research a topic of interest relating to maternal-infant nursing; to synthesize the information found; and to then draw inferences about the concept.

This paper is expected to be short, succinct, focused, and developed on the chosen topic. The student can adequately address the criteria in
3-5 pages, excluding the title and reference pages. All papers must be typed and in APA 7 format.  I encourage you to meet with Megan Hasler, the School of Nursing's librarian if needed for APA guidance or search questions, etc.

Students are strongly encouraged to send papers to the Writing Center prior to submission.
References must include a minimum of three (3) journal articles, and you may also include an appropriate medical/nursing dictionary or encyclopedia, the course textbook, the state department of health website for vital statistics, the CDC, etc. See evaluation criteria below for specific guidelines, and PDF attachment for a template.
Due by Sunday, November 5, at 23:59pm. In the box below you will find examples of topics that have an associated Healthy People 2030 objective. Topic must be approved.

You are the Nurse Leader/Administrator at a long-term care facility (not hospital). The rates of resident falls have been increasing over the last 6 months to a year in your facility causing some serious injuries for some of the residents. You, as a doctorate of nursing prepared leader, have to adequately describe the issue & create a Process Improvement project using the Six Sigma (DMAIC) process to address and solve the problem. During this part, you will address the DMA – Define, Measure & Analyze stages. A MINIMUM of 5 relevant evidence based sources (best are peer-reviewed articles) should be used and published within the last 5 years. Below are the (DMA) relevant issues to include in your Process Improvement Project:

DEFINE:

•Define the issue: What process are you trying to improve?

•Describe the team and stakeholders

•Plan out the project

•Make a plan for the change

MEASURE:

•What metrics will you measure

•How will you measure success

•How will you collect baseline data

ANALYZE:

•How will you analyze the data you collect

•What will you use to display data

•What is the reason for your wastes, delays, etc
