CASE STUDY: Family Member with Alzheimer’s Disease: Mark and Jacqueline

Instructions: Read the following case study and answer the reflective questions. Please provide rationales for your answers. Make sure to provide a citation for your answers.

Mark and Jacqueline have been married for 30 years. They have grown children who live in another state. Jacqueline’s mother has moved in with the couple because she has Alzheimer’s disease. Jacqueline is an only child and always promised her mother that she would care for her in her old age. Her mother is unaware of her surroundings and often calls out for her daughter Jackie when Jacqueline is in the room. Jacqueline reassures her mother that she is there to help, but to no avail. Jacqueline is unable to visit her children on holidays because she must attend to her mother’s daily needs. She is reluctant to visit friends or even go out to a movie because of her mother’s care needs or because she is too tired. Even though she has eliminated most leisure activities with Mark, Jacqueline goes to bed at night with many of her caregiving tasks unfinished. She tries to visit with her mother during the day, but her mother rejects any contact with her daughter. Planning for the upcoming holidays seems impossible to Mark, because of his wife’s inability to focus on anything except her mother’s care. Jacqueline has difficulty sleeping at night and is unable to discuss plans even a few days in advance. She is unable to visit friends and is reluctant to have friends visit because of the unpredictable behavior of her mother and her need to attend to the daily care.

Reflective Questions

1. How do you think this situation reflects Jacqueline’s sense of role performance?

2. How do you think that Jacqueline may be contributing to her own health?

Discussion Question

Scenario:

Everybody is in an uproar at Hometown High School. Somebody did a job with spray cans on the high school. The graffiti looks suspiciously like something you saw at a recent drive- in conference on gangs. Other teachers in the lounge mention the fact that this stuff has also been showing up on buildings around town. While this discussion is going on, the librarian says that she picked up some hard copy dropped beside one of the computers that looks like it might be about some outfit that labels itself “Growth and Development” and its contents seem to be directed toward some kid with the computer screen name “Deaddog.” The contents seem to have something to do with how one goes about establishing a “Growth and Development” chapter in Hometown (hint: the Gangster Disciples camouflage their movements by using words that start with “G” and “D”) and talks about something called “tagging.” The school board has called a special meeting to talk about this problem. You remember that a new kid has come to town from Detroit. He also seems to be wearing his clothes a certain way and constantly has on colors that you vaguely remember the speaker at that gang conference talked about. The new kid has generated quite a following. He seems to have a lot of money, a “kul” car, and a number of kids who are not going to be National Merit Scholars are hangin’ with him.

  1. Using the SARA model, please construct a brief written plan about how you will scan, analyze, respond, and assess the scenario.

Discussion 09.1: Diffusing Potentially Volatile Workplace Situations

HA4300D – Healthcare Management and Supervision

Discussion 09.1: Diffusing Potentially Volatile Workplace Situations

As illustrated in this week’s readings, sometimes supervisors are tempted to allow potential problems to go unaddressed (i.e., operating under the assumption that the situation will, eventually, correct itself). In most, if not all cases, however, rather than correcting itself, the situation usually escalates and has a negative impact on productivity and workplace morale. Reflect back on one or more situations in your current or former workplace where a supervisor neglected to effectively address a situation that evolved into a greater issue resulting in disciplinary and/or even legal actions by one or more employees. How could the supervisor have handled the situation better?
