Conflict Management

Dante and Tiffany both work for an advertising company and were assigned a new account together. Their manager, who was very intimating with a loud, assertive voice, instructed them to create a proposal for the new customer which included a design for a restaurant logo and advertising slogan to be used on several billboards throughout the area. They had one week to create the proposal before it would be presented to the restaurant owners. Their boss raised his voice and demanded that they do a good job on the presentation and secure this account.

During the first day, Dante approached Tiffany and suggested they come up with an outline to split up the work and manage their time. Tiffany immediately stated that she would take the task of the logo and would submit it at the end of the week because she wanted to make sure she received credit for her work. Although Dante would have preferred to work together on both tasks, he agreed to let Tiffany complete the logo on her own. After all, they had very little time to complete the project and do a good job on it.

Over the next two days, Tiffany ignored Dante’s requests to work together and any input or ideas he had for the project. She brought her progress directly to the boss for feedback without ever showing it to Dante. Tiffany even started working on the slogan without Dante. When Dante approached Tiffany about her actions, she told him that she was more experienced in her position than him and this is the way she gets things done. Dante stepped back and let Tiffany complete the project on her own.

At the end of the week, Tiffany presented the campaign to the restaurant owners while Dante stood to the side. The restaurant owners were impressed with the logo and slogan and decided to accept the proposal. The boss was very pleased with Tiffany and Dante’s work and suggested they work together on future accounts. Tiffany was annoyed by her boss’s suggestion but did not say anything. Dante felt very disappointed and frustrated having to work with Tiffany.

Answer the following:

1. Identify the main conflict(s) in the case study. Why are these conflicts?

2. What are the conflict triggers for Dante and how would you describe Dante’s feelings that contributed to the conflict?

3. Of the 5 Killmann’s Conflict Management Styles, which style was used by Tiffany in this case study? Describe.

4. Of the 5 Killmann’s Conflict Management Styles, which style was used by Dante in this case study? Describe.

5. How could this situation have resulted with a better outcome for all if a different type of conflict management style was used?

For this discussion you will review “Living well with HIV/AIDS – A manual on nutritional care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS” http://www.fao.org/docrep/005/y4168e/y4168e00.HTM

Then respond to the following:

1. What are three diet therapy considerations that must be made for people living with HIV/AIDS?

2. Why is it important for them to adhere to these dietary requirements?

3. What may happen if they don’t?

4. What two strategies can you use to facilitate adherence?

Please make an initial post by midweek, and respond to at least two other student’s posts with substantial details that demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and critical thinking. Remember that your posts must exhibit appropriate writing mechanics including using proper language, cordiality, and proper grammar and punctuation.

Due dates for your initial and response posts can be found by checking the Course Syllabus and Course Calendar.

Student-centered learning

Student-centered learning is always a good idea in making sure these new nurses build confidence and motivation as they move up (Billings, 2016). This can also bring more critical thinking for these students. Bringing in most of this to clinical is where I can see the student-centered work the best as it helps to meet their needs. What do you think would be the best setting for learning with nursing students?

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: pp. 469-494.
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Apply the following writing resources to your posts:

Initial Post Instructions

Main Post Paragraph 1: Evaluate an argumentative point
Choose a reading from the assigned pages in your textbook and note how the author addresses an argumentative point in the body of the article (in other words, not in the introduction paragraph(s) nor in the conclusion paragraph(s). Work to find a body point that demonstrates a range of strategies like logic, refutation, and author’s voice.

Then, please take the time to read and re-read the entire piece and your chosen section a few times, jotting down notes to help you, before composing a paragraph that addresses all of the following:

  • In what ways do you see the author’s voice being used? How does the author’s own voice (not the sources’ voices) drive and frame the argument?
  • What does the author use for support for the point? (for example, logic created by the author, sources, a combination?) Is this effective, in your view? Why or why not?
  • Does the author use any logical fallacies? If so, name them and explain why they are fallacies. If not, explain why the author’s logic is solid.
  • Does the form of this reading match the form of the writing we are learning: full essay paragraphs? If so, explain why and how. If not, explain why you think this particular piece of reading does not use academic essay format and what you might do to revise it. In other words, if there are many short paragraphs, could you put some together to form single paragraphs that are still driven by the author’s voice?

Main Post Paragraph 2: Practice Using Your Voice in a Full Body Paragraph Toward Your Essay
Referring back to the lesson, please compose and present a single, well-developed draft of one body paragraph for our argument research essay, paying special attention to making your voice the driving force and to using solid logic. Remember the parts of a good body paragraph for an argument essay:

  • Composing a smooth, clear topic sentence in your voice that provides a transition and that asserts your topic for the paragraph
  • Using your voice to introduce and present your evidence that supports your topic sentence
  • Using logic in your voice to tie the evidence to your argumentative point
  • Avoiding logical fallacies
  • Using concession and rebuttal if you are presenting opposing viewpoints
  • Ending strongly with your voice in an extended explanation of how all factors involved in this paragraph drive home your argument in this particular point
  • Making sure to synthesize throughout, with clear connections between all evidence and all of your logic and assertions

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Qualitative research and quantitative research

Hello class,

Qualitative research and quantitative research have both made vast contributions to the field of nursing. Although these two types of research are very different, they also hold some similarities as well. When conducting a quantitative research study, the researcher is trying to come to a conclusion that is not debatable. The outcome is a matter of fact and there is no questioning the truth of the outcome. For example, the researcher is conducting a study on the breakdown of the US population by age. There is a certain number of people per each age group and there is no opposition to the outcome. By definition, quantitative research, “involves the process of objectively collecting and analyzing numerical data to describe, predict, or control variables of interest. The goals of quantitative research are to test causal relationships between variables, make predictions, and generalize results to wider populations” (McLeod, 2019).
Qualitative research is “the process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting non-numerical data, such as language. Qualitative research can be used to understand how an individual subjectively perceives and gives meaning to their social reality.” (McLeod, 2019) Data for this method of research can be done, for example, through surveys. In that survey, let us ask the question of, “How do you like to celebrate your birthday?” There is no expected outcome and the researcher is not trying to prove anything correct or incorrect. It is more of an open-ended question. While researching these different methods of research, one source mentioned a strength of qualitative research that is powerful, that strength is, “Qualitative methods that allow researchers to explore the views of homogeneous as well as diverse groups of people help unpack these differing perspectives within a community” (Choy 2014) Regardless of which method is used, there are pros and cons to each depending on what the subject of the study really is and each method has contributed greatly to the field of medicine.
