Case Analysis – Collaborating with Outside Providers

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the PSY650 Week Three Treatment Plan  and Case 9: Bulimia Nervosa in Gorenstein and Comer (2014). Please also read the Waller, Gray, Hinrichsen, Mounford, Lawson, and Patient (2014) “Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa and Atypical Bulimic Nervosa: Effectiveness in Clinical Settings,”Halmi (2013) “Perplexities of Treatment Resistance in Eating Disorders,” and DeJesse and Zelman (2013) “Promoting Optimal Collaboration Between Mental Health Providers and Nutritionists in the Treatment of Eating Disorders” articles.

Assess the evidence-based practices implemented in this case study. In your paper, please include the following.

  • Explain the connection between each theoretical orientation used by Dr. Heston and the treatment intervention plans utilized in the case.
  • Describe the cognitive-behavioral model of the maintenance of bulimia nervosa.
  • Explain why Rita was reluctant to participate in Dr. Heston’s request for her to keep a record of her eating behaviors. Use information from the Halmi (2013) article “Perplexities of Treatment Resistance in Eating Disorders” to help support your statements.
  • Recommend outside providers (psychiatrists, medical doctors, nutritionists, social workers, holistic practitioners, etc.) to the assist Rita in achieving her treatment goals. Use information from the DeJesse and Zelman (2013) “Promoting Optimal Collaboration between Mental Health Providers and Nutritionists in the Treatment of Eating Disorders” article to help support your recommendations.
  • Describe some of the challenges and ethical issues that Dr. Heston may encounter when working collaboratively with the professionals that you recommended.  Apply ethical principles and standards of psychology relevant to your description of Dr. Heston’s potential collaboration with outside providers.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment interventions implemented by Dr. Heston, supporting your statements with information from the case and two to three peer-reviewed articles from the Ashford University Library.
  • Recommend three additional treatment interventions that would be appropriate in this case. The recommended articles for this week may be useful in generating your response to this criterion. Justify your selections with information from the case.

PSY650 Week Three Treatment Plan    Behaviorally Defined Symptoms: Rita attempts to control her weight by fasting or consuming large quantities of food (e.g., multiple slices of pizza, gallons of ice cream) followed by purging (vomiting). Rita binges two to three times per week, and reports feeling “guilty” after each episode.   Diagnostic Impression: Bulimia Nervosa  Long-Term Goal:  Reduce bingeing and compensatory behaviors by changing distorted attitudes about weight and any other thinking patterns.  Short-Term Goal: Establish regular eating patterns by eating in regular intervals and consuming 2,000 calories per day.   Intervention 1: Dr. Heston will educate Rita about the etiology of eating disorders.   Intervention 2: Rita will read psychoeducational handouts and treatment manuals for homework. Intervention 3: Rita will monitor her food consumption using a nutritional journal. Intervention 4: Dr. Heston will teach Rita how to identify dysfunctional thinking and develop more healthy cognitions and coping skills.  For additional information regarding Rita’s case history and the outcome of the treatment interventions, please see Dr. Heston’s session notes under Case 9 in Gorenstein and Comer’s (2015), Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology.

1.   Find and read at least FIVE peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to your species. Review articles are not acceptable.2.   Develop a hypothesis based on your readings about your species. State the hypothesis in your Introduction or Methods section.3.   Martin & Bateson, Measuring Behaviour, is your “bible” for observational research. Make sure to read before beginning your zoo observations, and include it in your references.4.   Create an ethogram with which to collect data, making sure to select behaviors relevant to your hypothesis. Operationally define each of these behaviors, citing appropriate references.5.   A minimum of 10 behavioral categories should be included in your ethogram. You may need more behavioral categories; use as many as needed (10+) to addresses your hypothesis.6.   Choose your sampling methods (e.g., focal, dyad, group) and method of data collection (e.g., 1-0 time sampling on a 2 minute interval). This is your research design. What is an hypothesis? How to develop one for your zoo observation project and paper:Step 1: An hypothesis is a concrete statement or question that can be supported or answered with either a yes or no answer or with a trend in the data. For example: “Do captive adult male chimpanzees exhibit greater levels of aggression than females?”Or“Male captive adult chimpanzees exhibit greater levels of aggression than females.”Or“Infant ringtail lemurs spend more time in proximate and direct physical contact with their mothers than do their juvenile siblings.”Or“Do captive female polar bears exhibit fewer stereotypies than the males in the same enclosure?”Or“What percentage of time per day do captive King Penguins spend engaged in social interactions, swimming and feeding compared to the Macaroni Penguins in the same enclosure?”Step 2: Develop a testable hypothesis for an observational project. It should include comparisons of categories of behavior. For example, within a behavioral category (e.g., social interactions), you can compare males and females within a species, or infants to juveniles, or infants and juveniles to adults, etc. Or you could compare behaviors exhibited with high numbers of zoo visitors present to when there are few zoo visitors present. Be creative with your ideas.

Review the most recent publication of the Monitoring the Future National Survey on Drug Abuse from the assigned reading. After reviewing the Key Findings of the most recent survey, address the following: ◦What trends stand out as most in need of attention for prevention interventions? ◦What trends stand out as pointing to progress already made in prevention? ◦How did the study confirm or disconfirm what you anticipated about current trends in adolescent use and experimentation?

Beef Lab Report

First, thoroughly discuss the production cycle of beef cattle. What management skills are needed to be a successful beef cattle producer? Also, discuss the importance of safe and humane handling when working with cattle. Describe two things you learned or found interesting during your tour of the Steer-A-Year Barn/HAMB Facility.

Assessment and Diagnosis “Under the Gun”

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review Standard 9: Assessment  in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and DSM-5. It is recommended that you read Chapters 4, 7, and 10 in the Sommers-Flanagan and Sommers-Flanagan (2013) e-book, Clinical Interviewing, as well as the Kielbasa, Pomerantz, Krohn, and Sullivan (2004) “How Does Clients’ Method of Payment Influence Psychologists’ Diagnostic Decisions?” and the Pomerantz and Segrist (2006) “The Influence of Payment Method on Psychologists’ Diagnostic Decisions Regarding Minimally Impaired Clients” articles for further information about how payment method influences the assessment and diagnosis process.

For this discussion, you will assume the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and diagnose a hypothetical client.  Begin by reviewing the PSY650 Week Two Case Studies document and select one of the clients to diagnose.

In your initial post, compare the assessments typically used by clinical and counseling psychologists, and explain which assessment techniques (e.g., tests, surveys, interviews, client records, observational data) you might use to aid in your diagnosis of your selected client. Describe any additional information you would need to help formulate your diagnosis, and propose specific questions you might ask the client in order to obtain this information from him or her. Identify which theoretical orientation you would use with this client and explain how this orientation might influence the assessment and/or diagnostic process. Using the DSM-5 manual, propose a diagnosis for the client in the chosen case study.

Analyze the case and your agency’s required timeline for diagnosing from an ethical perspective. Considering the amount of information you currently have for your client, explain whether or not it is ethical to render a diagnosis within the required timeframe. Evaluate the case and describe whether or not it is justifiable in this situation to render a diagnosis in order to obtain a third party payment.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers who chose a different case than you by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

In your responses, evaluate whether your peer took into account the ethical guidelines outlined in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologist and Code of Conduct when he or she assessed and diagnosed the client. Suggest additional questions your peer might ask the client. Propose an alternative diagnosis that might arise from the additional questions you have suggested.

Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.

Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders are so common in treatment that they are considered the norm, not the exception. More than half of clients with one diagnosis will have the other–a broad statistic that emphasizes the importance of mental health counselors having a working knowledge of addiction and its treatment. Further, it’s important to recognize that the presence of co-occurring disorders complicates treatment considerably–the total is far more than the sum of its parts.

For this Discussion, you will analyze the efficacy of integrated treatment in co-occurring disorders. To facilitate your response to the prompt, consider a hypothetical client example–such as an individual with bipolar disorder and cocaine use disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol use disorder. In reality, many individuals with co-occurring disorders have multiple mental health and addiction diagnoses; however, for simplicity of this Discussion and ease in making your points, consider just one diagnosis under each area.

Post by Day 4 an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of an integrated treatment approach for co-occurring disorders. Then, describe how you would conceptualize a client with co-occurring addiction and mental health issues using a hypothetical client example to help illustrate your points. Be sure to include ideas for assessment and treatment planning using specific examples to support your assertions.

Unit 7: Unit 7: Science in the Bathroom: Keeping clean – Discussion

Water and Waste

Water is a seemingly abundant resource on the planet, but that perception would be incorrect. Although 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, less than 1% of that is potable — fresh water that people can drink and water crops with. The rest is unusable with about 97% of it in the oceans, which are too salty for these purposes.

The average American uses about 100 gallons of water per day, depending on how you calculate water usage. The majority of that water is used in the bathroom for bathing and flushing toilets. In the United States you can simply turn the faucet on when you need water, but others in many parts of the world are not so fortunate. Have you ever thought about where all of that water comes from or where it goes after it leaves your house? How do communities ensure that the water supply is safe? How do you ensure that the water you send down the drain does not harm the environment?

Review how wastewater is treated (the water that you send down the drain):

Additionally, review some information on drinking water:

  • Source: EPA. (2013). Standards & risk management. Retrieved from http://water.epa.gov/drink/standardsriskmanagement.cfm

Recently, researchers have started to look at the impact that common pharmaceutical and personal care products have on the water supply. Read up on what this means to you and the environment:

  • Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. (n.d.). Pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Retrieved from http://water.epa.gov/scitech/swguidance/ppcp/

In your posts this unit answer the following questions:

  1. You have all heard that you should conserve water but this may seem odd depending on where you live. In an arid place like the southwestern United States it seems logical to conserve water, but in the Great Lakes region where water appears to be abundant, people are also encouraged to save water. Why are even those with an excess of annual rainfall being encouraged to conserve water?
  2. Currently drinking and wastewater treatment facilities do not treat for pharmaceutical or personal care product pollutants. Why?
  3. How should we, as a country, handle pharmaceutical or personal care product pollutants? Should they be handled through new treatments or through prevention? Explain your answer.
  4. Review your local community, town, city, or state government’s website for information and policies on water conservation and wastewater treatment. Post one interesting point that you learned in your research. Be sure to provide the resource for the information with your post.
  5. Later in the unit, compare your local government’s water policy information to one described by one of your classmates. Are there any similarities? Are there any differences?

Be sure to review the Discussion Board Grading Rubric provided in the Course Syllabus.

SLP 3 (ECOL 100)

Module 3 – SLP

Efficiency and Adaptation

Cooperation and trade are common in the natural world. Based on the cost of production and the constraints presented by the environment, an organism may be more successful by trading for a product than producing it. In this situation the organism may specialize in one product and trade for another. In this SLP we will examine an example of trading partners, mycorrhizal fungi and plants, and compare it to the principles of international trade, an important component of macroeconomics. After you view this tutorial, consider some of the principles it introduced and how they apply to specialization and trade between the symbiotic partners that make up a mycorrhizal association.

In the videos and tutorials you completed for your Case 3 Assignment, you learned about how plants can utilize sunlight to build sugars. Some of these sugars are sent to plant roots for growth and storage. Mycorrhizal fungi live within or surrounding plant roots as a symbiosis. Mycorrhizal fungi cannot make their own food. As fungi, they have the ability to decompose organic (carbon-based) material, but they do not contain chlorophyll and must obtain carbon directly from the environment (like we do!). The fossil record shows mycorrhizal fungi living in association with the earliest plants, bryophytes.

Accessed at http://www.larousse.fr/encyclopedie/divers/h%C3%A9patique/46890

Scientists believe that this symbiosis may have been key to the success of plants on land. Begin your introduction to this symbiosis at the Compost Gardener, and be sure to view their video. Next, proceed to this site maintained by the University of Western Australia, School of Plant Biology: http://mycorrhizas.info/vam.html to complete your research and locate important images for your SLP assignment.

Using the resources provided above, develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:

Slides 1–3

Compose a brief overview of the structure and function of plant roots. Include definitions and images of these terms: epidermis, exodermis, cortex, endodermis, and root hairs. You can refer to the following resource: Roots:  http://mycorrhizas.info/root.html

Slides 4–10

Provide an explanation of the symbiosis between mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots. Include definitions and explanation of the differences between Arbuscular mycorrhiza and Ectomycorrhizal fungi using the following images:
