Misleading Statistics

Statistics are powerful and convincing when used properly. This feature of statistical reasoning, however, also makes them liable to misuse. In this week’s assignment, you will find a legitimate statistic and explain how it might be used to mislead an audience.

·  Start by searching the internet for a reliable statistic. Make sure the statistic you find comes from an original or primary source – whether it be a peer-reviewed article, think-tank, or other organization. Do not use news articles that report the findings of a study; use the original study itself. Please remember to cite your source.

·  After you locate your statistic, explain how it might be used to mislead an audience into embracing conclusions that the statistic does not support by playing the role of someone who is trying to lie with statistics.

·  Design a fake advertisement or news story in which you will try to use the statistic in question to make a persuasive point.

o  Your advertisement or story can consist of a written document, graphic, or video.

o  Whatever you decide to do, you should feature a depiction or description of the statistic and an explanation of how it might be used to support a misleading agenda.

·  After creating your fake advertisement or news story, include a short one paragraph statement on why it is misleading and what can be done to avoid being misled by it.

Introduction

Feminist scholar Carol Gilligan developed a feminist approach to ethics, the ethic of care, with her book In a Different Voice. She, along with other feminists, maintain that the traditional, male identified ethical theory tends to focus on justice and abstract reasoning, whereas women’s approach to ethics often aims at maintaining and nurturing attachment with others. Further, the ethics of care values the role of emotions such as empathy and sensitivity as a means to determine the best ethical course of action.This activity aligns with module outcomes1 and 4.

Discussion Question

Prepare for this discussion by completing your readings and viewings. Then respond to the following:

• Is caring necessarily a female trait, biologically or socially? To what extent does distinguishing between male and female ethics encourage more gender stereotypes? Can it lead to the evaluation of one ethical approach as superior to the other? Please provide a concrete example.
• Describe the ethics of care and identify a character in a book, poem or piece of literature who best exemplifies this philosophy.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings from the module with proper APA style formatting. You may use additional sources and materials as long as they are relevant to the discussion and cited properly.

Research two to three electronic health care resources. These could be websites, mobile applications, or multimedia resources used by health care consumers for their medical needs.

Write a 350- to 700-word summary discussing the following prompts based on your research:

• Describe the websites, applications, or multimedia resources.
• How do health care providers use these resources to enhance their products and services?
• What are the implications of using these resources in the health care industry? What are the implications for the consumer?

Racism: looked at through the social learning perspective VS. the cognitive Learning perspective

Each student will choose a social issue or research topic in psychology. Students will select two perspectives covered in the course and compare and contrast how these perspectives explain the social issue or research topic. The paper will include a title page, abstract, the introduction to the social issue or research topic, a brief discussion of each historical perspective, the compare and contrast of the two perspectives, a conclusion, and references.
